What Does Luke 5:4 Mean?
The sermon ends, and Jesus turns from the crowd to the one man. His command runs against the grain of the trade: deep-water net fishing on Gennesaret was night work, and the night had already failed. A teacher is telling a fisherman how to fish, at the wrong hour, in water the nets had just come out of.
'Launch out into the deep' has rung in Christian ears ever since as the voice of Christ calling past the shallows — beyond the safe, the tried, and the already-failed. And the command carries a promise inside it: let down your nets 'for a draught.' He does not send Simon out to try again; he sends him out to receive.
