What Does Luke 7:16 Mean?
Holy fear falls on both crowds, and it turns to praise. The people reach for their deepest categories: a great prophet — like Elijah or Elisha, each of whom raised a son — has risen among us, and in him "God hath visited his people."
They speak better than they know. "Visited" is the word of Zacharias' song: the dayspring from on high has come to His people in their need (Luke 1:68, 78). In Jesus, God's visitation is not a prophet's brief errand but God drawing near in person, gate by gate, grief by grief. Reverent fear and loud praise belong together; those who have watched mercy defeat death cannot stay silent about either.
