What Does Luke 8:12 Mean?
The first soil is explained. Those by the wayside hear the word, but it lies on the surface of a hardened heart, and the birds of the story are unmasked: the devil comes and takes the word away, lest they should believe and be saved.
Notice what the enemy fears. He does not trouble himself over the word on a shelf; he comes for the word in a heart, because believing leads to being saved. The hard path gives him easy work, for nothing has sunk in that he must dig out. The verse is a call to guard the first moments after hearing, to let the word go deep quickly, before distraction or scorn can carry it off.
