Jesus asks the man his name, perhaps the first person in years to address him as a person at all. The answer that comes back is not a name but an occupation: Legion, because many devils were entered into him.
The man cannot even say who he is; the multitude within answers for him. A legion was thousands strong, and the word measures both the depth of his captivity and the ease of his coming rescue, for thousands against one word of Christ is no contest. Jesus asks for a name because He restores persons, not cases, and He means to give this man back to himself.
