What Does Luke 8:38 Mean?
The man out of whom the devils are departed begs to be with Him, asking, in effect, for the place the twelve hold. But Jesus sends him away.
It is a surprising refusal, and a tender one. Some are called into the boat; this man is called back to his own house, to the streets that knew him at his worst. The region has just asked Jesus to leave, and He grants it, but He plants a witness as He goes. Sometimes the harder and holier assignment is not to follow Christ across the water but to live for Him at home.
