What Does Luke 9:17 Mean?
The meal ends with an audit. All ate and were filled, not merely fed a morsel but satisfied, and the fragments that remained filled twelve baskets, one for each apostle who had earlier calculated the impossibility. The leftovers outweigh the original lunch.
The provision of God is not stingy. When Christ feeds, people are filled, and there is more at the end than at the beginning. The twelve baskets preach to the twelve doubters: every man who said send them away now holds surplus in his arms. Scarcity thinking does not survive close acquaintance with Jesus.
