What Does Luke 9:18 Mean?
Luke alone tells us how this great scene begins: with Jesus praying. In a moment of solitude, with only the disciples near, he rises from prayer with a question: Whom say the people that I am? The question of the ages opens quietly, between a Master and the men who know him best.
Jesus does not ask because he lacks information; he asks to draw his disciples toward confession. Notice that the question of his identity emerges out of his communion with the Father, as if the answer can only be rightly heard in an atmosphere of prayer.
