What Does Luke 9:34 Mean?
While Peter is still talking, heaven interrupts: a cloud comes and overshadows them, and fear falls on the disciples as they enter it. Israel knew this cloud from its story, the presence that covered Sinai and filled the tabernacle, glory wrapped in mystery so that men could stand near it and live.
God draws near not to destroy but to speak, yet his nearness is never casual. The fear of the disciples is the old, right trembling of creatures at the border of holiness. Notice that the cloud envelops them; they are taken into the presence, not kept outside it. In Christ, God brings people into the very cloud of his glory, and what they hear there is not condemnation but a Father speaking of his Son.
