What Does Luke 9:43 Mean?
Amazement ripples through the crowd at the mighty power, the sheer majesty, of God displayed in the healing. Luke then pivots in the middle of the verse: while every one wondered at all the things Jesus did, he turned from the applause to his disciples with something urgent to say.
Jesus does not build on the wave of wonder, for he knows how quickly amazement evaporates and what waits in Jerusalem. So he uses the loud moment to prepare his own for the quiet, terrible one coming. Notice that the majesty of God is seen in the mercy of Christ to one tormented child; and notice that the Lord values understanding in his disciples above astonishment in his crowds.
