What Does Luke 9:44 Mean?
Against the astonishment of the crowd Jesus sets a command: Let these sayings sink down into your ears. Then the saying itself: the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. It is his second announcement of the passion, spoken while everyone else is still marveling at the miracle.
Sink down, he says, because hard truths float on the surface unless they are deliberately taken in. The delivering will be treachery on the human side and, deeper down, the purpose of God giving his Son for the world. The hands of men, hands he made, will seize him; he knows it and walks on. Disciples still need this discipline: to let the word of the cross settle past the ears into the depths.
Luke 9:44 in the Original Language
