What Does Luke 9:57 Mean?
As they travel, a volunteer steps forward with sweeping words: Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. The offer sounds complete, no conditions named, no limits set. But he speaks on a road that, since verse 51, has only one destination: Jerusalem, and the cross.
Jesus will neither flatter nor refuse him; the next verse simply tells him the truth about where whithersoever leads. Enthusiasm is a gift, but discipleship cannot live on it alone; it must become informed, counted-cost commitment.
