Luke 9:58 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus answers the volunteer with an unvarnished account of his own condition: foxes have holes, birds of the air have roosting places, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. The Lord through whom all things were made travels his own world as a guest with no guaranteed bed, and following him means sharing the road.

He became poorer than the foxes for our sake, and his poverty was our enrichment. He hides none of this from the would-be disciple: come, but come knowing the accommodations. Those who follow him trade settled comfort for a moving tent, and gain instead his company on the way and a place prepared ahead. He asks for nothing he has not first given up himself.
