Context

Malachi closes the Old Testament with a final contrast between the destinies of the wicked and the God-fearing on the coming day of the Lord. Verse 1 warns of burning judgment for the proud; verse 2 turns to the bright hope reserved for those who revere God, promising healing and joyful restoration.

What Does Malachi 4:2 Mean?

Malachi 4:2 shines as a promise of healing and joy for those who revere God: "unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings." The verse opens with "But," setting this hope against the warning of judgment just before it. For the wicked, the coming day burns; but for "you that fear my name" -- those who hold God in reverent awe and live faithfully -- the same day brings the warmth of sunrise. The image is breathtaking: the "Sun of righteousness" rises, scattering darkness as the dawn does, and it comes "with healing in his wings." Just as the morning sun spreads its rays like outstretched wings across the sky, bringing warmth and life to a cold and weary world, so this righteous Sun rises to bring healing to God's people. After a long night of waiting and hardship, the dawn breaks with restoration.

The result of this sunrise is exuberant life: "and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall." The picture is of young cattle released from a confining stall into open pasture, leaping and frisking with the sheer joy of freedom and abundance. This is the gladness of those who have been healed and set free -- energetic, playful, alive. After the dark warnings of the book, Malachi ends his people's hope on this radiant note: for the God-fearing, dawn is coming, healing is coming, joy is coming. The night will not last forever. For readers today, this verse speaks tenderly to those who fear God yet feel weary or wounded. The promise is that righteousness will rise like the sun, bringing healing on its wings, and that those who have walked through darkness will one day go forth leaping with the joy of release. The dawn belongs to those who fear His name.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew "shemesh" (sun) is the daytime light. "Tsedaqah" (righteousness) means rightness and justice. "Marpe" (healing) means a cure, remedy, or restoration to health and wholeness.

Application

If you fear God yet feel weary or wounded, hold to this promise: righteousness will rise like the morning sun, bringing healing on its wings. The night of hardship will not last forever. Live in reverent faithfulness, and look for the dawn -- the day when you will go forth with the leaping joy of those who have been healed and set free.
