What Does Mark 1:27 Mean?
The synagogue erupts. The people question among themselves, reaching for categories: what thing is this? what new doctrine is this? Teaching with authority they had just witnessed; now that same authority has commanded an unclean spirit and been obeyed. Word and power belong together in this man, and they have never seen anything like it.
Their question is exactly the right one, and Mark wants his readers asking it too, scene after scene, until the confession of the opening verse becomes their own. Yet the verse also carries a caution: amazement is a beginning, not a destination. Crowds can marvel and remain unchanged; disciples rise and follow. The right end of wonder is faith.
