What Does Mark 1:26 Mean?
The spirit obeys, but not gently: it tears at the man, shrieks, and goes. Mark does not hide the violence of the exit. The congregation watches a contest of powers end in a single moment, the word of Jesus standing unresisted, and the man is left free.
Evil is cruel to the last and loud on its way out, but it cannot remain where Christ commands otherwise. Deliverance sometimes arrives through a stormy hour rather than a calm one; the convulsion was not the failure of the healing but its final protest. What Christ evicts, he evicts fully. The shaking along the way, however frightening, does not get the last word; his word does.
