What Does Mark 10:20 Mean?
The answer is earnest rather than boastful: a devout life, careful in obedience from boyhood. Jesus does not contradict him. By the outward measure of the commandments, this man's record is clean.
And yet he is still kneeling in the road, still asking. A kept rulebook and a hungry heart can live in the same person; obedience has not silenced the question his soul keeps asking. His honesty about that ache is itself a kind of faith, and it holds him before the Lord a moment longer.
