Only Mark records the look and the love: Jesus beholding him loved him. What follows flows from that love: one thing thou lackest. He is told to sell, to give to the poor, and then comes the heart of it, the call given to every disciple: take up the cross, and follow me.
The one thing lacking is not another rule kept but an undivided heart. Jesus names the rival treasure and offers a better one, treasure in heaven and his own companionship on the road. Love sometimes asks for everything, because love intends to give everything.
