Mark 13:36 Meaning and Explanation

The parable closes on its sharpest point: the danger is not that the master will come but that he will come and find the watchers asleep. Within days the warning turned literal — in Gethsemane Jesus returned three times to Peter, James, and John, among the very men listening now, and found them sleeping.

'Couldest not thou watch one hour?' he would ask there. Yet those sleeping disciples were not cast off; restored, they spent the rest of their lives awake to their Lord's work. So the verse warns without crushing: spiritual drowsiness is real, it overtakes even the devoted, and the Lord takes it seriously — but his grace meets those who fail and wakes them to watch again. Blessed is the servant found awake; merciful is the Master who rouses the ones he finds asleep.
