What Does Mark 14:17 Mean?
Passover was eaten after sundown, so Jesus comes with the twelve in the evening. Mark says the twelve simply — the full circle, Judas among them, reclining at the same table with his bargain already struck.
This is the night the church has never forgotten. Paul hands on its memory with the words, the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread (1 Corinthians 11:23). Jesus knows what the night holds and comes to the table anyway — to eat with friends who will fail him, and to give them, before they scatter, the meal that will hold them together.
