What Does Mark 14:18 Mean?
The meal has begun when Jesus breaks its peace: one of you which eateth with me shall betray me. The wording echoes Psalm 41:9 — mine own familiar friend, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
To share bread in that world was a pledge of loyalty; betrayal from the table was treachery at its darkest. Jesus says it not to expose Judas before the others but so that, when it happens, they will know he was never deceived. He knows the worst about the table and still breaks bread at it. Such is the love that will carry him to the cross.
