What Does Mark 14:19 Mean?
No one says, Is it Judas? Each asks, Is it I? — and the form of the question in Greek hopes for reassurance, almost Surely not I? One by one the question circles the table, sorrow spreading with it.
Their response is its own lesson. Eleven honest hearts, confronted with a prophecy of treachery, look first inward. They had learned enough of the heart and its deceits (Jeremiah 17:9) not to answer, Never I. Self-examination before the Lord — without despair and without presumption — is the posture this verse commends, and the spirit in which his followers still come to his table (1 Corinthians 11:28).
