What Does Mark 14:23 Mean?
After the bread comes the cup. Jesus gives thanks and hands it around the table, and Mark adds a small, weighty clause: and they all drank of it — the very men whose courage will fail before dawn.
He does not offer the cup to the deserving; he offers it to disciples who will scatter within hours, and all of them receive. And the thanksgiving itself is a wonder: Jesus blesses God over the cup of his own suffering. Those who drink after him learn both lessons — to receive grace they have not earned, and to give thanks even over what will cost them dearly.
