Jesus gives the cup its meaning: This is my blood of the new testament — the new covenant — which is shed for many. The words reach back to Sinai, where Moses sprinkled the blood of the covenant (Exodus 24:8), and to the promise of a new covenant written on the heart (Jeremiah 31:31-34).
