What Does Mark 14:52 Mean?
Seized by the cloth, the young man abandons it and runs into the dark naked. It is the desertion of the night carried to its extreme: a follower so desperate to get away from Jesus that he leaves his only garment in the hands of the soldiers.
The scene recalls the word of Amos about the day of disaster: he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day (Amos 2:16). Discipleship without the cross ends in flight and shame. The first readers of Mark, facing persecution, would feel the question the fleeing figure poses: when following Jesus turns costly, what will we let go — our coverings, or our Lord?
