Bound, Jesus is brought to the house of the high priest — Caiaphas (Matthew 26:57) — where the council has gathered by night: chief priests, elders, scribes, the same three groups Jesus said would reject the Son of man (Mark 8:31). The hour is irregular, and so is the assembly, convened in darkness for a verdict already desired.
