What Does Mark 15:12 Mean?
The first maneuver has failed; the crowd wants Barabbas. So Pilate puts the remaining prisoner's fate to the square: what shall I do with him? A Roman judge hands his gavel to the loudest voice.
What shall I do with Jesus? It is the question no one finally escapes. Pilate tried to remain a neutral administrator, and the story shows that neutrality is itself a verdict; the man who would not decide for Jesus decided against him.
