What Does Mark 15:28 Mean?
Mark names the prophecy behind the picture. Isaiah 53:12 had sung of the suffering Servant who would be numbered with the transgressors, bear the sin of many, and make intercession for the transgressors.
To be counted among lawbreakers is the Servant's chosen place. He is numbered with the guilty so that the guilty may be numbered with him, listed among transgressors that our names might be written in heaven (Luke 10:20). Isaiah's whole song shadows this hill: despised, wounded for our transgressions, silent before his shearers, making his grave with the wicked. Seven centuries before the nails, the cross was already described. What looks like catastrophe is the keeping of a promise.
