What Does Mark 15:29 Mean?
Golgotha lay near a road, and travelers join the scorn. The wagging of heads is the old gesture of contempt the psalmist knew: all they that see me laugh me to scorn... they shake the head (Psalm 22:7). The taunt recycles the garbled charge from his trial, destroyer and rebuilder of the temple.
The mockery preserves a promise. He had spoken of the temple of his body (John 2:19-21), and in three days is precisely what is coming. The scoffers fling at him the very words that will shortly be their answer. So it often goes: what unbelief ridicules, resurrection vindicates. Three days from this taunt, the saying they mock will be the gladdest news in the world.
