He could have come down; he had said that legions of angels stood ready (Matthew 26:53). But the miracle the mockers demand would have unmade the mercy, for a Christ who saves himself saves no one else. He stays, not because nails can hold him, but because love holds him: obedient to the Father, faithful to us. The greatest display of power on that hill was the power not to come down.
