What Does Mark 15:32 Mean?
The priests dress their scorn as an offer of faith: descend now, that we may see and believe. Even the men dying on either side join the reviling; in this hour the scorn around Jesus is total, from rulers to fellow condemned.
See and believe reverses the order the Lord honors, for faith trusts the word of God before the vindication arrives (John 20:29). And the sign they demand is smaller than the sign they will be given: not a man stepping down from a cross, but a man walking out of a tomb. God does not answer mockery on its own terms; he answers it on Easter's. One of these revilers, Luke tells us, turned before the end and was promised paradise (Luke 23:39-43); even at the last hour, scorn can become faith.
