What Does Mark 15:33 Mean?
At the sixth hour, noon, when the sun stands at full strength, darkness falls and holds the land until the ninth hour. Mark offers no natural explanation; creation itself drapes the scene in mourning.
The prophets had spoken of such a day: I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day (Amos 8:9). Darkness at midday is the color of judgment and of grief, the world's lights lowered while its Maker suffers. At the first Passover, darkness lay over Egypt before the lamb was slain; at this Passover it covers the land as the Lamb of God bears the sin of the world (John 1:29). Even the sky preaches what the crowd cannot yet see.
