What Does Mark 15:4 Mean?
Pilate has watched prisoners beg, bargain, and counter-accuse. He prods Jesus toward self-defense, almost inviting him to supply Rome with a reason to release him: behold how many things they witness against thee.
The governor offers Jesus a way to fight for his life, and Jesus declines it. He will not save himself, because he is busy saving others, the very truth his mockers will later shout without understanding (Mark 15:31). The silence asks its own question of the reader: when the innocent one stood accused, he stood there willingly, and for us. No testimony against him would outlast the testimony he was about to give in blood.
