What Does Mark 16:4 Mean?
The worry of the road dissolves at a glance. Looking up, the women see that the stone — and Mark notes it was very great — has already been rolled aside. The thing they could not do has been done for them; Matthew tells of an angel who descended and rolled it back (Matthew 28:2).
The stone was not rolled away to let Jesus out; it was rolled away to let the witnesses in. The risen Lord needed no door opened. The women did, and so do we: the open tomb is God's invitation to come, look, and see for ourselves that death could not hold him (Acts 2:24). What was far too great for them was nothing at all for God.
