Mark 3:17 Meaning and Explanation

Next come two brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, fishermen called from their nets. Jesus gives them the name Boanerges, which Mark explains means the sons of thunder, perhaps a nod to their fiery, zealous temperament.

These brothers were bold, ambitious, even prone to wanting fire called down on opponents. Yet Jesus drew their thunder into His service rather than discarding it. The same intensity that could flare into anger would later burn for the gospel, as John became the apostle of love. Christ does not erase our natures but redeems them. The strong traits that trouble us can become, in His hands, instruments of devotion. He calls the thunderous as readily as the gentle.
