What Does Mark 4:7 Mean?
The third soil is not hard like the path or shallow like the rock. It is deep, fertile ground with a hidden flaw: thorn roots already live in it. Seed and thorns grow together, and the thorns, faster and greedier, slowly strangle the grain.
Notice that this plant does not die. It grows, leafs, and persists; it simply never bears. A life can host the word of God and a rival crop at the same time, and the rival wins not by killing faith but by crowding it. Fruitfulness, not mere survival, is what the Sower is looking for. The verse asks quietly what else is growing in the field of the heart.
