What Does Mark 6:2 Mean?
As was his custom, Jesus teaches on the sabbath. The hometown congregation hears the same authority that amazed Capernaum, and they cannot deny what they hear: real wisdom, real works of power. Their question, from whence hath this man these things, is the right question asked in the wrong spirit.
Astonishment is not yet faith. The listeners stand at a fork: wisdom like this is given, as they themselves say, so the Giver must be sought. To marvel at Jesus while refusing to trust him is to stop one step short of life. The question of where he received all this finds its rest only in the Father who sent him.
