What Does Mark 6:28 Mean?
The grim request is fulfilled to the letter: the head on the platter, carried into the feast, handed to the girl, handed to her mother. Mark narrates it without comment, letting the bare relay of the verse expose the household that arranged it.
Herodias finally holds her trophy, and it is worth nothing; the truth John spoke is still true, and her sin is still sin. Silencing the messenger never silences the message. The scene closes with evil apparently victorious, but Mark is writing a Gospel: God will have the last word over every Herodias and every grave.
