What Does Mark 6:29 Mean?
The followers of John perform the last office of love: they come for the body of their teacher and bury it with honor. It took courage to claim the corpse of a man the palace had executed, and they did not leave him to disgrace.
Grief and devotion walk together here. The burial of John quietly foreshadows another burial, when other hands would take down another faithful body and lay it in a tomb. For John as for his Lord, the tomb is not the verdict. God remembers his servants, and no faithful life is finished at the grave.
