The sequence is deliberate and unhurried: he commands the people to sit, takes the loaves, gives thanks, breaks, and gives. The same rhythm — took, gave thanks, broke, gave — will sound again in the upper room at the Last Supper. The disciples carry the bread from his hands to the people.
Thanksgiving comes before multiplication. Jesus blesses God over a supply that is plainly insufficient, and somewhere between his hands and the hungry it becomes enough.
