What Does Matthew 14:12 Mean?
John's own followers come to tend to him in death. With reverence they take up his body, give it burial, and then carry the news to Jesus. Their grief turns, fittingly, toward the One their master had spent his life announcing. In sorrow they go to the Lamb of God.
When the messenger is gone, the disciples seek the Master. John had said he must decrease that Christ might increase, and now his mourners instinctively bring their loss to Jesus. There is no truer instinct in grief than to carry it to the Lord. He receives both the body laid in the grave and the broken hearts that loved it.
