What Does Matthew 14:24 Mean?
While Jesus prays on the mountain, the boat is far from land, caught in the middle of the sea. The waves toss it hard and the wind drives against them, so that their progress is stalled and their labor exhausting. They are exactly where He sent them, and yet they are in trouble.
Obedience does not guarantee calm seas. The disciples were in the storm because they had done what Jesus said, not because they had strayed. So the faithful sometimes find the wind against them in the very path of duty. The storm is not always a sign of wandering; often it is the place where the Lord means to come to us.
