What Does Matthew 14:29 Mean?
Jesus answers with a single word: Come. Peter climbs down out of the boat and, against all nature, walks upon the water toward his Lord. For those steps the command of Christ holds him up where the sea should have swallowed him whole.
One word from Jesus made the impossible possible. As long as Peter acted on that word and moved toward Christ, the waves bore his weight. So faith that obeys the Lord's call finds itself doing what it never could alone. The power was never in Peter; it was in the One who said Come, and in the faith that took Him at His word.
