Spoken near Caesarea Philippi, moments after Simon confessed, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God' (verse 16). In response to that confession, Jesus gives Simon the name Peter and makes this promise about the community He is gathering.
What Does Matthew 16:18 Mean?
Right after Peter names who Jesus is, Jesus speaks about who Peter is and what He is going to do. He gives Simon a new name, Peter, which means a stone or rock, and declares that upon this rock He will build His church. The picture is of a building going up on a foundation that will hold. Then comes a promise that has steadied believers ever since: the gates of hell, the full power of death and darkness, shall not prevail against it. The church Jesus builds cannot be destroyed.
