What Does Matthew 17:22 Mean?
As they gather in Galilee, Jesus speaks again of what lies ahead. The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men -- handed over, given up to those who mean Him harm. He sets it before the disciples plainly so they will not be undone when it comes.
He walks toward the cross with open eyes, not swept along by events but laying down His life in step with the Father's will. The glory of the mountain and the shadow of betrayal belong to the same journey. Christ tells His own the hard truth in advance, so that later they may remember and believe.
Matthew 17:22 in the Original Language
paradidomi (παραδίδωμι), 'betrayed' -- to hand over or deliver up, used both of the betrayer and of Christ giving Himself.
