What Does Matthew 17:5 Mean?
Peter is still speaking when a luminous cloud -- the ancient sign of God's presence that filled the tabernacle and temple -- enfolds them. Out of it comes the Father's own voice, naming Jesus His beloved Son and adding the command that answers Peter's confusion: hear ye him.
The same words spoken at the baptism now ring from heaven again, but with one charge added. Moses said the people must heed the prophet God would raise up; here the Father says of Jesus, hear him. Above every honored voice of the past stands the Son, and the whole of faithful life flows from listening to Him.
