The riddle lands: in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be?

What Does Matthew 22:28 Mean?

Here is the punch line the whole story served: if all seven had her, the resurrection -- as the Sadducees imagine it -- produces an impossible tangle. To them this proves the doctrine absurd.

Their question assumes that risen life must simply replay present arrangements, only forever. Jesus will answer by exposing that assumption: they know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God (verse 29). Mockery often aims at a caricature; the reality God has prepared is greater than the riddles built against it (1 Corinthians 2:9).
