What Does Matthew 22:29 Mean?
Jesus answers the mockers directly: "Ye do err." Their mistake has two roots -- ignorance of what the Scriptures say, and unbelief in what the power of God can do. The Sadducees prided themselves on the books of Moses; Jesus will refute them from Moses himself (verse 32).
The diagnosis still instructs. Error grows wherever Scripture is unknown or the power of God is doubted -- and the two guard each other: the Scriptures reveal what God intends, His power assures that He can perform it. Questions about the world to come outrun our imagining, but they never outrun the power that raised Jesus from the dead (Ephesians 1:19-20).
