What Does Matthew 22:41 Mean?
The examinations are over; the Examiner speaks. All day the leaders have questioned Jesus -- taxes, resurrection, the law. Now, while the Pharisees stand assembled, He puts the question to them.
His question will not be a trap but a door: He asks about the Messiah, the very hope the Pharisees claim to guard. The Lord does this still -- after patiently answering our questions, He poses His own, and ours are never as searching as His. What we think of Christ (verse 42) is the question beneath all our questions.
