What Does Matthew 25:13 Mean?
Jesus steps out of the story to state its moral, repeating the keynote of this whole discourse (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44). The title Son of man is his own chosen name for himself, drawn from the vision of Daniel 7:13-14, where one like a son of man receives an everlasting kingdom.
To watch is not to calculate dates or live in anxious suspense; the maidens were not condemned for sleeping but for being unsupplied. Watching means living each ordinary day so that his arrival would be welcome — lamp fueled, work in hand, heart at home with him. Not knowing the hour is a mercy, for it makes every hour the one that matters.
