What Does Matthew 25:34 Mean?
For the first time in this Gospel, Jesus calls himself the King. His first royal word is come — the same invitation that marked his whole ministry (Matthew 11:28). The blessing flows from his Father, and the inheritance has been waiting from the foundation of the world: a kingdom prepared in love before those who receive it ever drew breath.
An inheritance is received, not purchased; it belongs to children. Yet the King will immediately describe lives that looked like his own — feeding, clothing, welcoming, visiting. The two notes sound together, gift and likeness: a kingdom prepared from the beginning, and a welcome that fits the life that was lived. From before the world was, God has been preparing joy for his children.
